Our Little San Diego Getaway

After our mission trip to Baja, Paul and I decided to stay a few extra days in San Diego, CA to explore a little and take a mini-vacation.

We enjoyed our stay in Old Town, complete with really old buildings and museums -- LOVED IT!

In Old Town, we also found a Jerky and Root Beer place that had all kinds of root beer and jerky. We tried alligator jerky, and it was really good. They also had some pretty weird kinds, such as the following: pheasant, ostrich, venison, kangaroo, boar, buffalo, etc. Instead of the typical wine tasting that everyone seems to enjoy, we had our own version - root beer tasting. They were all so good, but my top two would have to be Virgil's root beer and Berghoff's root beer.

We also enjoyed time at San Diego Zoo, where we saw the Pandas, the Tazmanian Devil, the most interesting Camel I've ever seen, koalas, polar bears, and more!

We also enjoyed taking the public transportation to visit Little Italy, the Glasslamp Quarter, and Seaport Village with the USS Midway ship.

Of course, anyone who knows me knows that I like to eat, and we did just that. Three places that I STRONGLY recommend if you are ever in San Diego are: the Cafe Coyote in Old Town, Bubba's BBQ in La Jolla, and Filippis in Little Italy.

We passed by some really nice restaurants with outside, candlelit seating before we came to what looked like a whole in the wall at Filippis. (Jan and Dudley Brewer recommended this place to us, and they did warn us ahead of time.) You have to pass through the market to get to the restaurant, and that is quite interesting, but they had the BEST lasagna and pizza that I have ever had before in my life. We will definitely be returning there!

Nevertheless, my favorite part was probably our time in La Jolla Cove, where we got to get up close and personal with sea lions, and the view was breathtaking!

After we went to La Jolla, we trecked quite a ways to get a picture of the cross on top of Mt. Soledad. We did not have a car and were not dressed to hike to the top of the mountain, but it was still a lengthy walk just to get this picture. Magnificent.

We took the red-eye flight back home on Friday night and flew out of San Diego around 8:45 pm. We switched planes in Las Vegas and was able to get a view of the lights from above. We flew out of Las Vegas about midnight and made it back to Atlanta this morning.

We are happy to be back home but not exactly ready to get back at it. Nevertheless, I learned some valuable life lessons on this trip, and I think I will approach this upcoming week a little differently - trying to focus more on what really matters, instead of the silly stuff I usually let stress me out.

It was a wonderful mini-getaway at the end of our mission trip, and we had a blast.
